BRAINS & BRAWN #9

"The Difference Between Good A Carb and Bad Carb"
Picture
Carbohydrates are a great source of energy for the body. Glucose, which comes from carbohydrates, is your brains source of energy.

Glucose is energy that is needed constantly for the brain. Glucose is also needed to power our muscles.

When we consume carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose. They are then taken by insulin and transported to different cells in the body to where ever it is needed.

There are essentially good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. Some examples of good carbohydrates are; fruits and vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Bad carbohydrates are; processed carbohydrates.

Some examples of processed carbohydrates are; white bread (bleached flour), candy and other junk food, and white rice.

The reason being that processed carbs are bad carbs is that those kinds of carbohydrates are:

1. Absorbed too quickly into the blood stream

2. They are nutrient deficient sources for healthy carbs

When the bad carbs are absorbed too fast into the blood stream, this results in a spike in blood sugar. That means that the blood sugar level rises quickly. In order for your body to bring your blood sugar level back down to the normal level, it requires a bigger than normal amount of insulin to take control. The blood sugar level then drops rapidly.

Two negative consequences that the body experiences will be:

1.       Feeling hungry again

2.       Fatigue

Another result of repeating this process could possibly be a diagnosis of diabetes. Since bad carbs don't come with any extra nutrient that you need, eating bad carbs are similar to consuming empty calories (like junk food and alcohol - they do nothing good for you.

Fruits and vegetables are the best sources for good carbs. Whole grains are as well, but when any grain is over consumed, the energy it contains becomes a burden to the body.
