BRAINS & BRAWN #19

"Myth Buster: Situps"
Picture
This issue will bust one of many fitness myths that exist. Have you ever heard someone say, "If you do 500 sit-ups a day and 250 stomach crunches every other day, you will lose belly fat!"?

The truth is this; you probably won't lose belly fat at all. Sit-ups and stomach crunches will work the abdominal muscles. That means you can build and strengthen the abdominal muscles but it may not help get rid of the fat that surrounds them. If you have a little bit of excess abdominal fat then sit ups could help - after a full-out workout.

If anything, you may even lose abdominal muscle mass instead of fat if you're not careful.

Fat needs cardiovascular exercises AND Strengthening exercises at the least in order to shrink in size. And cardio mixed with some form of muscle training Will amplify results. Remember an earlier newsletter when I explained fat cells for what they are and what they do?

Fat decreases in size according to the amount of extra energy the body uses to keep in motion. Muscles are mainly powered by glucose and not fat. Fat reduction requires the body to be in a more intense motion to get the heart pumping, blood flowing and the body heat up.

Fat and muscle are separate and increase and decrease in size by different means.

In the next Brains & Brawn Weekly Newsletter, I will reveal a short story with a message about how a fat "guru" tries to solve a weight loss problem with discouragement.

See you again in 7 days...
Kindest,
