BRAINS & BRAWN #27
"How Does Fasting Make You Fat?"
It's true that the fatter someone is that the longer they can survive than a person with not as much fat.
That would of course be during a time of famine. If you don't know what famine is, famine means a time when food is scarce.
There can be many variables that lead to this. Fortunately, the chance of that happening today is pretty low, but it could happen.
Any diet program should not be about starving your body. Fasting for any reason should be done with help from your regular doctor. Starving the body can be just as dangerous as feeding the body too much.
A yo-yo diet is the result of a fasting diet. A yo-yo diet is when your weight is constantly going up and down. This is not good.
The result would be like this; a person would start a fasting diet where they would starve themselves to lose weight. Maybe they actually lose some weight after a month or two. But when they come off the diet and get back into eating again, they are exposed to eating much more than they were before. Thus they will gain probably more weight than they had before.
Some people claim that they did a fasting diet for 5 days and it didn't work. The reason this doesn't work after 5 days is that losing weight happens over time.
It's more about "compound interest". The result of getting to your perfect weight is about the smaller amounts of fat you shrink over a period of time (days, weeks, months).
Let's say you lose 3 lbs. ever month over the next 6 months. This would mean a total lost weight of 18 lbs. Even if you were to start fasting, it doesn't mean your body weight will drop within a few days. It will drop just like it would drop if you changed your diet and started doing extra exercise.
Again, fasting can do more harm than good in the long run. There is no point in fasting to lose weight if you will put on more pounds after you get off the diet. If you eat healthier then your diet never has to change.
So as a friendly reminder: changing your diet should not include starving yourself and it should be more along the lines of just changing what you eat and possibly the amount of what you eat that will be beneficial to you.
The more you starve your body, the more your body will think that you have to eat more in case that period of "famine" ever happens again.
See you again next week!
